The question of “what is a trucker’s life” can be answered many ways, all of which are true…depending on your point of view. Just as the saying goes “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” so one’s view of trucking life can be negative or positive based on one’s experience or lack of experience.

Probably the best statement about a truck driver’s life is one I read on a blog owned by Schneider Trucking, at schneiderjobs.com, titled “Life of a Trucker: What an Average Day is Really Like”. Here the writer, an actual truck driver for Schneider states that “The Life of a Trucker Driver is What You Make of It”. So profound, and really goes for almost anything in life.

A True Life Look at One Trucker’s Life
If you want to look over the shoulder of the life of one truck driver, then you will want to go to YouTube and do a search for “Truckers Life” by Eiver2 Trucker. The videos are in Spanish with English subtitles, but are informative, and enjoyed by over 240K followers.
Trucking is a Lifestyle with a Code of Ethics
For most truckers, especially the over-the-road (OTR) truckers, trucking is a lifestyle. Truckers have their own code of ethics that stipulate how these “knights of the road” are to behave in a variety of situations:
- Drive with courtesy towards other truck drivers and the motoring public
- Don’t be a litterbug
- Don’t dump your pee bottle where people can walk in it
- Make sure your lights are adjusted so you don’t blind other drivers
- Try to be clean in clothing and personal hygiene
- Remember that times are changing and all too often those females prowling parking lots are being forced to do so. Don’t be part of the problem.
- “Don’t ask don’t tell” goes towards anything for which you may be prejudiced or for which others may be sensitive: race, religion, politics, or sexual orientation. Keep it to yourself. Let’s be the best we can be as we represent American trucking.

Truckers Lives Change with Technology
With the advance in communications and technology, a trucker’s life has been enriched, expanded, and strengthened. Instead of driving for hours with only a CB radio for communication, truckers can now talk to spouses and loved ones at the drop of a hat…or a soft touch on a smartphone screen.
Other advancements include GPS tracking, electronic logging devices, forward-looking camera systems, as well as new gadgets to make living in a truck much more convenient and homier.
